GOP: “Obama to blame for letting us damage U.S. credit rating”

"Obama had the chance to stop us. He had the opportunity to smack some sense into us. But he just sat there."
WASHINGTON—Republicans were unanimous in blaming President Barack Obama this past weekend for their tactics in the debt ceiling standoff that led to a downgrading of the United States’ credit score.
Recriminations began shortly after ratings agency Standard & Poor’s announced on Friday that they had lowered the U.S.’ score from a risk-free AAA to AA+. S&P defended their decision by citing instability in the political process due to Republicans’ holding the debt ceiling hostage and their relentless refusal to increase taxes to raise government revenue. While acknowledging both points, Republicans were quick to explain that President Obama was to blame for their actions.
“Yes, we considered the world economy a hostage worth taking and worth shooting, but that misses the point. Being out of power means you’re not responsible,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) while suckling blood from the neck of a newborn baby. “Responsibility lies with the President by default…. heh heh, ‘default.’”
Many emphasized that Obama should have crushed his opposition. “I believe in individual rights, especially the right to trample the rights of others,” says Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL). “It’s practically an imperative, which makes the President’s attempts to work together with us a complete dereliction of duty.”
Presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) concurred in a statement emailed to her supporters. “When an entire political party devotes itself to working against the national interest, they need to be fought tooth and nail. And make no mistake: we were ready to send America back to a time of bank runs and bread lines. We were going for the kill, and so I ask, ‘Why didn’t you try harder to stop us, Barack Obama?’”
President Obama, in response, sought to defuse the Republican criticism by co-opting it. “I too am disappointed in our President,” he said in a statement, “and the next time the GOP comes spoiling for a fight, I too hope that he is ready.”
